Gary Lubner founded This Day, encouraged by his children, to create a fairer future for new generations, today and tomorrow.
Gary Lubner founded This Day Foundation in 2023, driven by his vision to create a fairer future for new generations.
The Foundation focuses on specific key areas: early childhood development and youth unemployment in South Africa, and supporting refugee and asylum causes in the UK. Leadership development is a central theme throughout This Day’s work, drawing from Gary’s extensive leadership experience and his support of organisations such as the Obama Foundation and the Clore Social Leadership programme.
Gary’s commitment to social justice was shaped by his formative years in South Africa, where he studied Finance and Accountancy at the University of Cape Town. During the 1980s, he was actively involved in the anti-apartheid struggle, founding and chairing two anti-apartheid organisations. This early dedication to social justice has informed his lifelong commitment to creating positive change.
For over two decades, Gary led Belron, owner of Autoglass, Safelite, Carglass and other brands, to remarkable global success. During his 22-year tenure as CEO until early 2023, he grew the company’s sales more than sevenfold to approximately 6 billion euros, leading to a valuation of 21 billion euros in 2021. Under his leadership, the company expanded to employ 30,000 people across 38 countries. He continues to serve on Belron’s Board while focusing on his philanthropic endeavors.
At Belron, Gary made “giving back” a cornerstone value, initiating the Spirit of Belron Challenge in 2001 with six colleagues. This sporting event grew to include over 12,000 employees by 2023, raising tens of millions for Afrika Tikkun. Gary’s personal commitment to the cause is demonstrated by his participation in the triathlon event every year since its inception.
His dedication to education is exemplified through the Gary Lubner Scholarship at London Business School, where he completed his MBA, enabling talented African students to pursue their studies. His philanthropic work extends across multiple organisations, serving as chair and board member for various charities including the Nelson Mandela Legacy Trust, Afrika Tikkun, and the One to One Children’s Fund.
Gary is also passionate about political engagement that creates opportunities for young people, supporting the Labour Party in pursuit of this social mission. His advisory role with Spring Impact focuses on scaling social innovations, while his work with One to One Children’s Fund has helped pioneer transformative healthcare and support programs for children affected by HIV/AIDS, trauma, and disability.
After stepping down as Belron CEO, Gary has dedicated himself fully to philanthropic endeavours, particularly through This Day Foundation. His vision combines strategic business acumen with deep social consciousness, working to create lasting, systemic change for future generations.
